±X±[¤s - kun1 lun2 shan1

the Kunlun Mountains

Here is a word from the geography of China. The Kunlun Mountains lie between Tibet and Xinjiang extending into Central China.

It is interesting to see how the "mountain radical" drives the meaning of the characters while the phonetic characteristics are contained in the other part of the characters.

´Ý§Î - can2 xing2 OR

碎形 - sui4 xing2

fractal

can2 - remnant; residue; something left over
xing2 - form; shape; figure

Yesterday (March 22, 1978) I was thinking about a word for today for this page and I realized that I had no idea what the Chinese word for "fractal" might be. So I fired up a few search engines and found the Chinese site listed at the right in the links section and here you have it.

I'm not going to bore you with my interpretation of what a fractal is. Check out this site:
Exploring Chaos and Fractals
and you will find a very informative account of how chaos theory, fractals, the Mandelbrot set, strange attractors and butterflies are all interconnected and related. It really is a very dynamic and interesting field of modern mathematics which has had a profound impact on the way we look at the world!!!
