rong2 - banyan tree shu4 - tree The banyan is an interesting tree found in much of Southeast Asia from China to India. The tree is in the Ficus family and is related to the figs and Indian Rubber plants familiar to many. The banyan grows to a large size and then sends out aerial roots which when they touch the ground form new trunks. Left to itself, one banyan could potentially form an entire forest! The capital of Fujian Province, Fuzhou, is famous for its banyan trees. There are a few in one of my favorite vacation spots, Key West, Florida. In searching for banyan on the internet, I found that the word popped up frequently in sites dealing with bonsai and I found one site where you can buy banyan seeds. |
